NCDOT selected Vaughn & Melton as one of the regional firms to provide complete design support services for all the divisions in the western region. The services Vaughn & Melton was required to provide included Planning, Location & Surveys, Sub-surface Utility Engineering (S.U.E.), Roadway Design, Bridge and Culvert Design, Traffic Control Plans, Hydraulic and Hydrographic Design, Pavement Marking Plans, Right-of-Way Acquisition and Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI). Vaughn & Melton performed these services for projects in Divisions 10 – 14.
One of these projects included design of a traffic circle (roundabout) at the east sector of the interchange at I-26 and NC108 near Columbus. NCDOT had already built a traffic circle (see figure 1) at the west sector of this interchange, and after realizing the benefits to this heavily congested area employed Vaughn & Melton to survey the existing conditions and design a traffic circle for the east sector that duplicated the new traffic circle in operation of the west sector. (See figure 2) This design also involved designing an 8’ x 8’ box culvert extension needed for the additional fill slopes.
