Vaughn & Melton worked with the Tennessee Department of Transportation to redesign and update the existing Interstate 81, Exit 8 Interchange in Hamblen and Jefferson Counties. This project calls for a new 285-foot x 116-foot bridge to cross over I-81 approximately 3-feet higher than the existing bridges at the SR-32 crossing. SR-32 will then be redesign and elevated, utilities relocated, a side road redesigned, drainage modified, traffic lights installed, auxiliary lanes added and ramps relocated for a more functional traffic flow.
A 600′ radius ramp was added for the north bound ON and OFF movements. A new 420′ long bridge, over the railroad, was required on the new redesigned southbound ON ramp. The southbound OFF ramp was the only section that retained its original location. The project was inspired by strong growth in the area, including a new industrial park and agricultural park, which generated additional developments.
Special considerations associated with the project included the storm drainage, erosion protection and sediment control, as well as phasing of traffic and construction operations for the ramps and bridges over the Interstate. The construction cost was approximately $20 million. This successful project demonstrates Vaughn & Melton’s experience in Interstate roadway design, traffic management and preparing plans to TDOT standards.
