PROJECT: Safe Route to Schools - Sweetwater, TN

CLIENT: City of Sweetwater, TN

V&M was selected by the City of Sweetwater to provide engineering design services related to the construction of a downtown streetscape project funded in part by a TDOT Safe Routes to School enhancement grant.  The Sweetwater Safe Routes to Schools project improved the safety of students walking or biking to and from school by building new sidewalks where none existed and upgrading existing sidewalks to make them safer and ADA compliant.

The project scope included:

Changes as needed to 8,000 ft. of existing 5-foot sidewalk with the addition of ADA curb ramps at street crossings.  Care was taken to ensure that guidance from DOJ ADA Title II regulation and the DOT/FHWA section 504 regulation was adhered to insofar as curb ramps, street crossings, and sidewalk obstructions.

Constructed 3,700 feet of new sidewalk on the designated walking route. Transitions to existing sidewalks were designed along the route.

Upgraded 20 crosswalks with more visibility and automobile stop bar markings in advance of crosswalks; repainted existing crosswalks with thermoplastic paint at major crossings on Monroe Street.  Crosswalks, curb ramps, etc. all met requirements as set forth in the DOJ guidance.

Added signage in the school zone and walking/biking neighborhood surrounding school to increase awareness of student pedestrians.

Reduced speed of traffic on Monroe Street before crosswalk areas with slow speed signage in both directions.

YOUR PROJECT. OUR PROMISE.

Keeping the flow of commerce and community moving forward.
