PROJECT: KENTUCKY 30 IMPROVEMENT, PHASE I-II

CLIENT: Kentucky Transportation Cabinet

Vaughn & Melton was chosen by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to provide highway design and environmental studies for the proposed improvement of KY 30 from the Daniel Boone Parkway at London to US 421 at Tyner.  The new road is to provide better access to I-75 for the Jackson County Industrial Park and southern Jackson County.

Terrain along the proposed corridor is primarily rolling with a portion near Tyner classified as light mountainous.  Traffic demands indicated that most of the project be constructed as a 2-lane highway with truck climbing lanes as needed; however, our work included study of a 4-lane option for the southern 6.0 km near London.  The scope of work also includes widening of Daniel Boone Parkway and US 421.  The route crosses one river, the South Fork of the Rockcastle River, and numerous creeks and streams including Little Raccoon Creek, Moores Creek, and Pond Creek.

Two bridges and fifteen (15) concrete box culverts were determined to be needed during hydraulic studies.  All of the bridges and box culverts, along with several pipe culverts, impacted blue-line streams in the project corridor.  Mitigation measures utilized to provide a stable environment for creeks and streams included rip-rap channels and banks to control velocity and erosion.  Energy dissipaters were also investigated for locations with high outlet velocities.

Vaughn & Melton has provided Phase II roadway, right-of-way, structural and traffic design services as well as the compilation and coordination of all the environmental services.  The first section connects existing KY 30 at Little Raccoon Creek to the Daniel Boone Parkway.
