PROJECT: NCDOT TIP R-2915A - WATAUGA AND ASHE CO., NC
CLIENT: North Carolina Department of Transportation
This project consisted of widening 2.8 miles of existing roadway in Ashe and Watauga Counties from a 2-lane roadway to a 2-lane roadway with raised medians, superstreet intersection design, and the addition of a trumpet style interchange at the US 421\US 221 intersection. This project had numerous intersections designed to superstreet design standards to provide a higher level of safety for the traveling public having to cross over the opposing travel lanes.
As prime consultant, V&M provided Roadway Design (Right of Way Plans) utilizing corridor modeling design strategies to complete the requested plan sets. V&M also acted as the Design Team liaison and coordinator with NCDOT. As a subconsultant, RS&H provided the Hydraulic Design associated with the roadway design which
included drainage ditches, drainage collection and runoff structures, and pipes. An additional subconsultant, Wetherill Engineering provided the Traffic Mobility and Safety Design for the Team. This included a comprehensive Transportation Management Plan and a plan that addressed the maintenance and safety of the traveling public during construction. The design was completed for this project in early 2015.
When constructed, this much-needed project will improve safety for the traveling public, provide more efficient access to the Towns of Jefferson and West Jefferson, and will make it easier and desirable for new business to locate in the Northwestern part of North Carolina.
