Fountain Square Park
Vaughn & Melton was chosen by The City of Bowling Green, KY to provide the design and engineering services to the downtown area of Bowling Green, known as Fountain Square Park. The V&M Team worked on a series of improvements within the downtown to better pedestrian safety along two prominent streets, expand the City’s well-known Fountain Square Park, and convert an existing downtown trail and alley into iconic spaces highlighting the culture of Bowling Green.
Streetscape improvements include delineating on-street parking with striping and planted islands with street trees, new sidewalk pavement, and pedestrian crosswalks. An existing pathway, the Heritage Trail, was updated with new pavement designed to highlight the city’s connection to the Green River, trees, and pedestrian crossings to provide a safe, comfortable, and walkable connection between two existing downtown parks.
The Vaughn & Melton project team engaged and listened to the local community while working to develop ideas and concepts that will accomplish this and all other project goals. Over the course of the project, we held three stakeholder meetings and two public meetings, as it was imperative during the design process to have the citizens who utilize the project the most be able to be involved in the decision making.
According to Greg Meredith, City of Bowling Green Public Works Director,
“Fountain Square Park is at the heart of our city and is also the hub of a major redevelopment area. We…have been impressed with [V&M’s] ability not only to deliver on critical project milestones but also on how they take special care to foster trust within the community. From the initial stakeholder meeting through multiple public meetings, they have been able to bring innovative concepts to the table and also interpret and bring our ideas into focus so that our project goals will be met.”
