PROJECT: US 70 NEAR MARION, NC
CLIENT: North Carolina Department of Transportation
This one-mile NCDOT Moving Ahead Project consisted of widening and improving the existing two-lane roadway to a three-lane curb and gutter section with dedicated turn lanes into Pleasant Grove Elementary School and a double barrel box culvert extension. The main goal of this project was to mitigate the increased traffic volumes and safety issues involved with the school intersection.
Vaughn & Melton performed a turnkey project for NCDOT that included base plan surveys (GPS Control, Baseline Control, DTM, Topographic, Hydraulic and Property), subsurface utility engineering (S.U.E. - Level C), roadway design, hydraulic and scour analysis, storm drainage and erosion control design, structural design for the double barrel box culvert, contacting utility owners and coordinating for NCDOT, traffic control and pavement marking plans and staking the right of way.
Environmental issues at the stream crossing presented unique challenges due to the limited space, and the team’s commitment to complete the project while avoiding dwelling relocations/takes. Constructed in 2008.
